Here is some information about metabolic syndrome: • It is a name for a group of risk factors that, when found together, increase the risk of coronary artery disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes • These risk factors include high blood pressure, a large waist circumference, high cholesterol, and high blood sugar • Risk factors include aging, lack of exercise, and extra weight around the middle and upper parts of the body Researchers from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi randomly assigned more than 80 individuals with obstructive sleep apnea to three months of therapy with true CPAP followed by three months of therapy with sham or fake CPAP, or vice versa, with a one month rest period in between. CPAP is a treatment in which air is blown into the mouth and nose to help keep the airway open during sleep. It is a common treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. Before and after each treatment, the investigators assessed participants' cholesterol levels and blood pressure as well as their blood sugar levels, insulin resistance, carotid artery thickness, and fat around the midsection.
